2008 International Track Cycling Grand Prix
The 2008 International Track Cycling Grand Prix was held on Saturday 8th November, with the sprint team from Malaysia and the strong women's team from Holland, of course Australia was well represented with past and present Olympic and world senior and junior champions.
The scene was set for an afternoon/evening of track racing, the spectators started to arrive early, a good sign. The program was split into 2 events first the Support program, for all juniors up to U/17, plus B & C Graders and a few Masters, some U/19's and senior needed to qualify for the State Championship 30 lap scratch race.
Support program was well attended with lots of juniors of all age's great racing, Mitch Benson was in the thick of it, not being able to ride in the feature as he is a U/17 and riding a restricted gear, Monica Young, U/17, had some successes, and so it went on, the 8 qualifiers went on to the meat grinder Men's Open Scratch Race featuring Cam Meyer, Graham Brown, Chris Sutton etc, and the best of luck.
The stand was very full by the time the Feature Program started, we were in for a great night and we were not disappointed.
It started with a flying 200m the 2 Dutch girls, under 12 secs, then along came the men, with the 3 Malay sprinters under 11 secs, Scotty Sunderland also managed a creditable 10.63 to hold up the Aussie Flag.
The 2 state title scratch races went to 2 West Aussies, Josie Tomic & Cam Meyer, all first 3 places came from Western Australia, a very gutsy ride came from the third place getter in the women's Davina Summers who rode with a fractured wrist, she went also to win the women's 25 lap Derny, a great ride from this very determined young lady.
Josie Tomic showed why she is a force to be reckoned with in the world scene with wins all over the place, of course there are other young women knocking on the door and this was the night to display their craft and they did not disappoint.
The men were just as exciting Cam Meyer, Graham Brown, Chris Sutton showing the way in the endurance events, the Derny ended up with both bike riders and motor bike competing for the line sprint, Graham Brown won Cam Meyer a close Second with a motor bike fighting a 3rd place with Chris Sutton, this had the stand on it's feet cheering, was hard to judge this one the heat of the moment nearly got in the way.
The Malaysian Sprint and Dutch Teams showed the way in their disciplines giving Australia a bit of a thrashing.
